Components glossary for full electrical conversion kits
Please note: this article is being updated regularly, please let us know if there's anything you'd like to see in here.
When we're talking full wiring conversion kits there are a few different names for some components, so we've put together a glossary with an image and what we call it. This can be helpful if you have any questions.
Please note: there are lots of components listed here that are optional extras and not part of standard kits. This is just a one-stop place to see what's called what. If you'd like help working out which components you need check out our "which product is for me" folder in the FAQs.
First, we will deal with 12V Power items:
Image | Item name | General purpose |
---|---|---|
Gloss Black control panel or switch panel | Provides the USBs, voltage reading, and switching for most items in the majority of conversions. | |
C-line control panel in silver | As above but with different dimensions and a different look | |
6-way fuse box | Holds fuses in order to protect 12V circuits. | |
10-way fuse box | Holds fuses in order to protect 12V circuits. | |
Common earthing block or "earth block" | Joining lots of wires together allowing a single earth wire to be run back to the battery. | |
Voltage sensing split charge system. The black box pictured at the bottom is the "split charge relay". The red cover is over the positive battery terminal and the black cover is over the negative battery terminal | Allows charge to flow from you main battery into your leisure battery while the engine is on and then isolates the two when the engine is turned off. | |
Battery isolation switch | Can be used in some systems to quickly cut all power going in and out from your leisure battery. Great to make sure you don't leave anything on when storing the van over winter. | |
Heavy-duty fuse | Protecting heavy current circuits, such as battery to battery chargers, split chargers and inverters. | |
CTEK DC-DC charger or battery to battery charger | Provides a split charge and MPPT solar charge function for vehicles with smart alternators. |
Next up is our 12V lighting range.
Image | Item name | General purpose |
---|---|---|
LED down lights (not touch sensitive) | Flush mounting in ceilings to give the main light source in conversions. | |
LED step light | Add to steps and plinths to give a more subtle mood lighting. | |
Flexistem reading light | Touch sensitive and great for giving a focused light. | |
Now we will talk 240V items
Image | Item name | General purpose |
---|---|---|
Covered inlet socket | Provides a plug in point either underneath or in the bonnet for discreet mains hook up inlets. | |
Flush mounted inlet socket | An alternative to the covered inlet socket, these are used to cut a hole through the side of the van leaving just the lift up flap visible. | |
Van to site hook up lead | Providing the link between the site hook up post and the inlet socket on your van. | |
Mains to leisure battery charger (8A) | Charges the leisure battery automatically when the hook up is plugged in. Best for smaller battery banks. Check here to see which charger to use. | |
Mains to leisure battery charger (20A) | Charges the leisure battery automatically when the hook up is plugged in. Best for larger battery banks. Check here to see which charger to use. | |
Gas bonding kit | Used to link metal gas pipes to the main earthing terminal for vans with 240V power inside. |
