Which settings to program on your battery charger
When you have a 240V mains plug in as with most of our mains hook up kits and full conversions kits, we often supply our 8A solid state 7 stage mains to leisure battery charger. These have a couple of programmable settings on the front.
They only need to be set once and as long as your leisure battery remains connected the charger will recall the settings as soon as it's plugged into the external mains power.
The settings are simply the type of battery, AGM, wet or GEL, and the charge rate. 2A, 4A or 8A.
The battery should be set to the type of leisure battery you have. The table below shows what type some of the common batteries we supply are, if you have another battery and are unsure what type it is, check with the manufacturer.
Battery | Type | Charge rate |
---|---|---|
XV190MF Powerline | Wet | 8A |
Yuasa L36-EFB | Wet | 8A |
EXV110AGM Enduroline | AGM | 8A |
For the charge rate on all other batteries, you're aiming for between 5-10% of the capacity of the battery. So for a 110Ah battery, that's 5.5A-11A charge rate, so the recommended setting would be 8A.
The only time it's worth using the lower charge rates, would be with batteries smaller than 80Ah or in very hot conditions to reduce the amount of heat being put into vehicle from the charging process. This is minimal, but it can be useful.
